Please Read this Awesome Construction Story:
The recently completed construction which is a shopping center located on the corner of 7th Street and Junipero Avenue in Long Beach has been getting much praise on its beautiful and unique design by the prominent architect, Hannibal Petrossi, and its handcrafted woodwork by Sunpeak Construction. The new Big Saver Foods center, on 7th Street and Junipero, dwells in a mid-century traditional to modern-style building is thirty five thousand square feet and fills a need to the residents in the community.
Nick Azartash, President of Sunpeak Construction, believes that this beautiful mid-century modern-style grocery store is beneficial for the community of Long Beach because of its cost-conscious prices, fresh foods, and excellent full service. Over the past three or four decades mainstream grocers like Vons, Ralphs and Albertsons have gradually moved away from older areas of the city, while discount and ethnic chains like Superior, Northgate and Big Saver Foods have begun filling in the those voids for grocery stores. The new Big Saver Foods caters to the densely populated neighborhoods with relatively lower disposable income levels, and it exhibits a design and architecture more elegantly than other grocery stores located in more affluent Long Beach neighborhoods.
Several years ago the owner of Big Saver Foods, Uka Solanki, who is also a well-known philanthropist in the community & sponsor of various charity foundations, purchased the older shopping center on the corner of 7th Street and Junipero that included a Big Lots store with plans of building a new top-notch full-service market. The design of the new market would consist of exterior wood paneling with storefront glass and smooth-finish plaster, which would be perfectly designed for a commercial shopping center. The local-based architecture firm, Petrossi and Associates, in collaboration with City of Long Beach Planners and its construction partner, Sunpeak Construction, delivered plans for the perfectly laid out shopping center with an uplifting façade that respects the original exterior architecture while incorporating new features that liven up the shopping center with a large area for parking and landscaping that attracts neighboring streets with pedestrian traffic.
The Long Beach Post shared a story about the introduction of a new Big Saver Foods Market in the Rose Park neighborhood of Long Beach and how successful the design planning was between the developer team, City Planning staff, and the community in the redevelopment of the commercial center. In contrast, the story also explained the challenge faced between the other Big Saver Foods grocery stores in the nearby areas of Long Beach, and how the design of the latest store by Petrossi and Associates solvedthe city planning obstacles required by the Long Beach city planning documents.
The redesign for the 7th Street commercial center went through three design phases. The first design was modeled after the North Long Beach Super Saver with heavy use of cement plaster and similar wall designs. However, it was not favored by the community and City staff. Finally, the design team decided to attempt to create a symbolism of the historic neighborhood surrounding the site to offer a fresh look without taking away and respecting the original architecture that keeps the swooping roof form of the existing structure and large north facing glass facade. It was enhanced with nature wood paneling and stone accents, especially around the new portion of the structure that will house a Chase Bank. The architecture is also more appealing and sleeker than the new several surrounding grocery stores. The new design is a benchmark that may set a style tone for future developments in the area around East 7th Street.
The collaboration of the Petrossi and Associates, Sunpeak Construction, The City of Long Beach Building Department & the Community, and political constituents allowed for a successful build of the new Big Saver Foods with unique architecture. The future of Long Beach’s development can be modeled by the efforts that went into this benchmark project, as it stands out above all previous store designs. And, the new Big Saver Foods is successful in working with Long Beach’s plans for an attractive, modern, neighborhood-friendly full-service grocery store.
